Suspended and Bowl Gongs
In the world of gongs there are two broad categories, Suspended gongs and Bowl Gongs. Both have been made and played for thousands of years. Tibet is considered the home of the bowl gong. And China is considered the place where the suspended gong was first made. thus, it is no surprise that the Chinese gongs are considered the best in the world.
Artdrum.com carries the full line of Wuhan suspended gongs, the best of the best.
Playing Suspended Gongs
Suspended Gongs are traditionally played with beaters or mallets. Small gongs are traditionally played with bamboo sticks or even western style drum sticks. Larger gongs are played with beaters or mallets. Typically, the larger the gong the softer and bigger the mallet. When playing a large gong, the player will often "prime" (lightly striking without creating an audible sound) the gong prior to the main stroke. Priming significantly enhances the sound of the main stroke. The prime stroke is not meant to be heard but rather to stimulate the gong and create vibrations that are essentially inaudible to the audience. Priming requires a sensitive touch and is one of the most challenging techniques for a gong player.
