Idahoan, the Tuned Steel Tongue Drum that is All Tone, No Tank™

Bret Hutchinson originally created the Idahoan in 2010. Bret later teamed up with Max Kundrat of Mid-East Mfg., Inc. Together they developed multiple line of professional quality steel tongue drums. They are available in 12" & 14" sizes. The 12" is available in 8 and 12-note versions. The 14" is available in 10 and 16-note versions. The 16-note is constructed of 8 Dual Tongues. Each Dual Tongue consists of a small tongue surrounded by a larger tongue, which are two distinct notes. Please contact us if you'd like to order a Dual Tongue version or have any questions.

The Idahoan is a variation of Tank Drums. Yet unlike some tank drums, which are bulkier and can be metallic and chintzy sounding, the Idahoan is smaller & produces pure, clear, beautiful bell-like tones. Thus, they are "All Tone, No Tank".

Their beautiful sound quality makes them effective for professional musicians, recreational players, students, schools, music therapists & any one who enjoys pretty sounds.

The Idahoan can be played with mallets as well as hands and fingers.

They are available in acoustic and electric versions. The sounds of the acoustic carry very well and the electric version have pickups, which allow you to plug into an amp, and thus are good for playing in larger spaces. The electric and acoustic versions are the same drum except for the pickup. Both electric and acoustic have great resonance and long sustaining notes.

Each Idahoan can be tuned to numerous scales using a simple magnetic system. Idiopans are available in various sizes and can be tuned to 100s of different scales. Multiple drums can be played together and you can arrange the tuning so a set of drums forms more octaves.
